Friendship Farm ‘n More Suggested Grooming Supplies

Oster A-5 Clippers (come with one #10 blade) or Andis Clipper or Wahl are the best.  And the new Laube Speed Feed

Clippers can be single or double speed – singles don’t heat up as fast.

2 wide #10 blade  (For bodies in the summer time 70 Degrees plus)

2 #30 blades         (For face, feet, tummy, and 1 ½” tail strip on stds, ½” on minis)

2 # 3 ¾ blades or #3 blades (For bodies in the winter time – under 70 Degrees daytime temps.)

Scissors:  Andre Tisserand are best, yet medium priced 1 -  8” straight, 1 -  8” curved (stds) 7” for minis.

Ear Powder – to help with gripping the ear hair.  Pluck first then wash out with ear wash.

Veterinarians Best Natural Care Ear Relief Wash

Malaseb – new ear wash for dogs with ear infections – really works, however there have been some allergic reactions reported on this.

Over the counter Vaginal cream from the pharmacy for yeast infections of the ears   as they  don’t contain any steroids.  (New reports indicate that the triple strength used for three days is doing a great job)

Resco Toenail Clippers

A Dremel if you can afford it:  With the sanding bands this is a marvelous way to trim dogs

Toenails, and they don’t seem to object to it at all.  Just be sure not to catch their ear hair.

Slicker Brush – for hair under 2” (Medium size for body, small size for pups, minis, and ears)

Pin Brush – Safari brand – for hair over 2” (Medium or Large for Stds, small for minis)

Comb – 1 ½” deep combination wide/narrow tooth

(Please note: for Pin brushes that pull free from the handle – remove and reglue with “Gorilla Glue” – its fantastic and I have saved a lot of expensive brushes this way.  It holds better than the original glue.  Please follow instructions carefully however.)

Shampoo Formula’s

For creams, apricots, silvers – Mrs White’s Blueing                (Woolite-regular for light colors, new dark for darks)

BEST IN THE WORLD FOR DOGS THAT HAVE BEEN SKUNKED:  SOS SKUNK ODOR SHAMPOO BY PROFESSIONAL PET PRODUCTS.  ONE SHAMPOO THE SMELL IS GONE.  BEST I HAVE EVER USED, AND NO MESS.

Regular Supplies:

Collars:

For pups at pickup – standards 12-16” ½” wide adjustable collar, miniatures 8-12” ½” wide adjustable collar.

For adults & puppies – Hound Collars - Wide flannel back slip collar by Critter Creations in Oregon

                www.fidogear.com  or 1-877-FIDOGEAR

Leads:

For training we prefer simple slip leads.

For walking:  The best is an 18”-24” lead.  (Train with this lead first before the long leads)

For play walking:  A good 6’ lead.

For those that develop pulling tendencies, or for those with weaker hands: the Halti.  I DO NOT RECOMMEND HALTERS – AS THEY ALLOW THE WHOLE DOG TO PULL AGAINST YOU, AND THEY DO NOT MAKE UP FOR NOT TRAINING A PUP PROPERLY.

Crates:  Most of our standards need to end up in Large, X-Large or Giant Crates.  Adult Miniatures - #350 size.

These are our favorite crates:

Nylabones Fold-A-Way & Accessories Kit – Best price from Care-A-Lot

If flying periodically:  the Ferrari Flyers with Accessories Kit.

FOR DAILY USE THE FERRARI CRATES ARE OUR FAVORITE, BECAUSE THEY SNAP TOGETHER EASILY, COME IN 250, 350, 450, AND 550 SIZES, HAVE A DOUBLE LATCH GATE THAT WILL OPEN EITHER DIRECTION OR CAN BE TAKEN OFF ALTOGETHER, WITHOUT TAKING APART THE CRATE.

THESE ARE HEAVY DUTY, ATTRACTIVE, TWO-TONE CRATES, THAT ARE VERY EASY TO CLEAN.

Crate Pads:  NONE WITH ZIPPERS.

Double Stitched Fleece (severeal brands) or the new beds we like are Quiet Time Pet Beds by Midwest – great for crates, floors and whelping boxes.  Fleece top, heavy cotton bottoms, wash and dry great, large rolled pillow edge that pups and adults both love.   Now also available in several brands but we still like the Quiet Time best, heavier cotton bottoms.  These now also come in several colors.  I have washed mine hundreds of times & they still are holding up.
